PROBLEM: How to capture the essence of the play for a brand identity.
PURPOSE: To convey the awkwardness and humor of the play with an art direction that suits.

The Second Woman is a play directed by Randall and Anna Breckon that entailed one scene with husband and wife that occurs over 100 times with 100 different male actors over a period of 24 hours. The overall visual direction I chose was inspired by retro cartoons from the 1950s and 60s. This was decided as a result of the mis en scen within the play which featured an array of furniture items and costume designs as a result of being loosely related to the 1950 Noir Thriller of the same name. While the play is a drama in many regards, the awkwardness of each 100 man entering the scene for the first time often created an element of comedy as audience members would often laugh at each actors interpretation. Thus, the characters I chose to create in the retro style were by design silly, off-kilter and awkward, rather than trying to emulate more dramatic collateral.
